LINCOLN -- Tens of thousands of Big Red fans leave a lot of trash...a lot of it is recyclable. Saturday was the Environmental Protection Agency's Game Day Challenge, where volunteers encourage fans to toss their aluminum cans, plastic cups and bottles into green recycling bins or bags. Volunteers and coordinators of Sustain UNL make their way to tailgates around UNL's campus It started with 8 participating schools. Now, there are more than 80 colleges and universities taking part in the Game Day Challenge. UNL joined in 2010. About 10,000 pounds of waste are collected on a typical game day.
