Doctors Determine 1975 Killer Not Insane
LINCOLN -- If you were in Nebraska in 1975, you remember the killing of six members of the Henry Kellie family of Sutherland. Erwin Charles Simants went to prison for that mass murder, initially sentenced to the electric chair, but that verdict was overturned on appeal and Simants was found not guilty by reason of insanity and sent to the Lincoln Regional Center. Doctors have determined Simants is no longer insane. If a Lincoln County District judge agrees, Simants will go free after 38 years. The judge will taken 30 days to review Simants' case and decision on Simants' release by Oct. 24th.
