Audio Clip of Pelini's Frustration Toward Fans and Media Causes Online Firestorm

LINCOLN -- A storm of criticism continues to flood social media websites over a piece of audio containing explicit comments from Nebraska head football coach Bo Pelini, following the Cornhuskers’ 34-27 come from behind victory over Ohio State in Lincoln two years ago.  Deadspin.com on Monday afternoon released the clip of Pelini’s rant prior to his postgame interview on Oct. 8, 2011 in which he expresses his displeasure with an athletic official and a reporter over some newspaper reporters about their coverage of the team at the time and fans for leaving at halftime.  The interview was recorded ahead of time and been obtained by another party, who released it to Deadspin on Monday.  KFOR News has been searching through various social media postings, most of which expressed disappointment toward Pelini while others sided with him and his efforts to turn the Husker football program around.

Through the Nebraska Athletic Department, Pelini released a statement Monday evening.

“I want to sincerely apologize for my comments from two years ago which became public today.  I take full responsibility for these comments.  They were spoken in a private room following the Ohio State game.  I was venting following a series of emotional events which led to this moment.  That being said, these comments are in no way indicative of my true feelings.  I love it here in Nebraska and feel fortunate to be associated with such a great University and fan base.  I again apologize to anyone whom I have offended.”

University of Nebraska Chancellor Harvey Perlman also issued a statement Monday evening.

"I am aware of the publication of Coach Pelini's comments, I am disappointed and in discussions with Shawn Eichorst about addressing the issue."

Nebraska Athletic Director Shawn Eichorst released a statement immediately afterword, saying “I am disheartened and disappointed by the 2011 comments published today attributed to Coach Pelini about our dedicated and passionate fans and supporters. I have spoken with Chancellor Perlman and I have addressed the situation with Bo and expressed our deep concern."
