Gun Violence Issue Topic Of UNL Panel Discussion

LINCOLN -- Panelists for a gun violence discussion at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Tuesday night said lacking access to mental health and family dysfunction are the roots of American gun crime. Superintendent of Lincoln Public Schools Dr. Steve Joel said gun violence in this country is primarily a social problem. Panelist, Imperial Senator Mark Christensen, a staunch gun rights proponent, said this country's gun violence is due to a decline in morality in society. Panelists didn't agree on a single solution to the problem, but insisted that it;s a multi-faceted issue.  UNL psychology professor Susan Swearer said gun violence is a mental health issue. Swearer is co-director of the Bullying Research Network.
