Beutler Rejects Three Building Plans For Pershing Center
Mayor Beutler rejects 3 plans for renovating Pershing Center. Turning the 50-year-old auditorium into a downtown library would cost about $33 million. Another proposal combined a new library with office, housing and retail space, costing the city a 30-year lease at $2 1/2 million a year. The third proposal included UNL student housing and retail space, requiring the city to pay $2 million for tearing down Pershing plus tax increment financing. Mayor Beutler tells KFOR NEWS, in the end, all the proposals were too costly. Pershing Center will be closed in the fall of 2014, unless a viable plan comes in before then.
