Chadron students will have a few extra days off for Labor Day. Wildfires in Northwest Nebraska forced Chadron State College and the local school district to cancel classes. People living along parts of U.S. Highway 385 are evacuating. Thursday Chadron residents say they could see massive smoke plumes to the south, but school and city officials say they do not believe the blaze poses an immediate threat to the town. Displaced livestock are being moved to the Dawes County Fairgrounds. Chadron Public Works Director Milo Rust says the fire intensified overnight. Local and state officials are fighting it.
