LES Opts To Keep Turbines

Lincoln Electric System has decided not to scrap two wind turbines along I-80 between Lincoln and Waverly. Earlier this year the utility received proposals from two companies to replace the 14 and 13 year old turbines with larger and more powerful models. Utility vice president, Jason Fortik says a comparison showed it would be more economical to keep the old turbines than to erect the replacements now. The old ones should last at least 6 more years. They can generate 660 kilowatts each. A single megawatt is enough electricity to power 240 to 400 households.
