LINCOLN -- Lincoln Police have determined that an assault and arson Sunday morning at a 33-year-old Lincoln woman's home near 22nd and "E" Streets is a hate crime. Officer Katie Flood said on Monday words were spray-painted inside the home referencing sexual orientation. A police report says the victim was tied up and had words carved on her body with a knife. She says there is not much of a suspect description, but the victim reported seeing three masked men. The original call Sunday morning was about a fire, but when officers got there, they found a female victim across the street, saying she'd been assaulted. The fire was reported to have been intentionally set. No one's been arrested. The news of this incident has sent shockwaves throughout the community. Mayor Chris Beutler issued a statement on the alleged abuse, saying....“Hate crimes are despicable and appalling to me and to all Lincoln residents,” said Beutler. He goes on to say “Lincoln strives to be a community that embraces tolerance and equality. We stand united with our gay and lesbian citizens in denouncing violence directed at any group. The City of Lincoln and the Lincoln Police Department will do everything in our power to ensure that justice is done.”
