Game-Winning Walk Helps Buckeyes Past Huskers


Nebraska has fallen into the loser's bracket of the Big Ten baseball tournament. The Huskers lost 3-2 on Thursday to Ohio State in a game that was decided in the ninth inning. Nebraska was down to its last strike in the top of the ninth, but Bryan Peters tied the game with and RBI single. 

Winnipeg Pitcher Holds Off Saltdogs


Mark Hardy helped the Winnipeg Goldeyes downed the Lincoln Saltdogs 4-1 on Haymarket Park's Opening Night Thursday. Hardy pitched 6 1/3 innings, allowing one run on five hits while striking out nine and walking zero to earn the win. Yasel Gomez's two-out single sparked the lone Lincoln run of the night, which was ultimately driven in by Stephen Douglas with a single.

Kickoff Time Set For NU's Homecoming Game


Nebraska's homecoming game against Illinois on Oct. 5 will kick off at 11 a.m. The Big Ten Conference on Thursday announced start times for this football season's homecoming games. Television coverage will be announced later.

Hitting and Pitching Come Through For Huskers In Win Over Michigan


After dropping a 3-game series to Michigan last week at Hawks Field, the Nebraska baseball team responded with an 11-to-2 win Wednesday afternoon over the Wolverines at Target Field in Nebraska’s first game of the 2013 Big Ten Tournament. Sophomore Kyle Kubat pitched 7 innings of one-hit ball, while Blake Headley, Pat Kelly and Austin Darby each produced multi-hit days at the plate.

Saltdogs Take Series From T-Bones


The Lincoln Saltdogs wrapped up a three-game series in KC against the T-Bones Wednesday night, winning 6-3. Stephen Douglas went four for five last night and that three-run homer wound up being the difference in the Saltdogs win over the T-Bones.

Huskers Get Another Shot At Ducks In Super Regional


The Nebraska softball team isn't fazed by having to travel to Oregon to play the third-seeded Ducks in this weekend's NCAA super regional. The Pac-12 champion Ducks (49-9) handed Nebraska (43-13) its most lopsided loss of the season and have won 24 straight at home.

UNO's Keele and Herold Receive Summit League Honors


Nebraska-Omaha right fielder Ryan Keele is player of the year and newcomer of the year in the Summit League, and Mavericks coach Bob Herold is coach of the year. The conference announced its baseball honors at a banquet Wednesday night in Elmhurst, Ill. Keele batted .461 in league games and was second in all games at .385.

Former Papillion-LaVista Volleyball Coach Toczek Named New Southeast AD


Lincoln Southeast High School officials announced Tuesday that JJ Toczek will be the high school's new athletic director. Toczek comes to Southeast from the Papillion-La Vista School District, where he served most recently as a high school and district administrator.

Post-Season Honors For Seven Husker Baseball


Seven members of the Nebraska baseball team are being honored by the Big Ten Conference, including Chad Christensen and Pat Kelly, who were each tabbed as first-team All-Big Ten performers by the league coaches.

Saltdogs Hold Off T-Bones Rally


The Lincoln Saltdogs got quality starting pitching and whacked three more home runs in a 5-4 win over the Kansas City T-Bones Tuesday in Kansas City, Kansas. Dennis Raben has four home runs in the first six Saltdogs games. The Dogs got three homers last night and then had to survive three solo homers by the T-Bones late in the game. 

T-Bones Get Home Run Record, Edge Saltdogs


In a game that saw record-setting power, the Kansas City T-Bones outslugged the Lincoln Saltdogs 14-10 at CommunityAmerica Ballpark Monday night. The T-Bones five home runs in the bottom of the third is a new American Association record for home runs in an inning.

Gillespie Named New AD At Midland


Dave Gillespie, who has been the athletic director at Lincoln Southwest High School the past seven years, has been named the director of athletics at Midland University in Fremont. Gillespie, a former Nebraska football player, was Coach Tom Osborne's recruiting co-ordinator during a national football championship era for the Huskers.

Husker Softball Team Moves To Super Regional Against Oregon


The Nebraska softball team fought through three weather delays and defeated Stanford 10-5 Sunday to win its first NCAA regional championship since 2002. The start of the game was delayed 32-minutes by rain, and Stanford took a 3-1 lead after the first inning. Then, the rainy weather delayed the start of the second inning for more than an hour.

Error Costs Saltdogs In Series Finalie at Gary Southshore


The Lincoln Saltdogs wrapped up their season-opening series in Gary, Indiana against the Gary-Southshore Railcats by losing 6-5 to the Cats. With the game tied at 5-5, Saltdogs shortstop Brad Payne bobbled a grounder with the bases loaded in the ninth inning, allowing the winning run to score for the Railcats.

Hooper Selected To Play On USA College Squad


Nebraska women's basketball star Jordan Hooper has earned a spot on USA Basketball's 12-player roster for the Women's World University Games in Russia in July. Hooper, who will be a senior next year at Nebraska, earned a spot on USA Basketball's Women's World University Games Team after three days of competition.

Saltdogs Fall In Season Opener WIth Railcats


The Lincoln Saltdogs opened their 2013 season in Gary, Indiana Thursday night against the Gary-Southshore Railcats. Things got off to a good start for the 'Dogs with former University of Miami player Dennis Raban at the plate in the first inning, as he hit a three-run homer and the Dogs start the season with a 4-0 lead in the first inning. However, the Railcats caught up.

Wolverines Pull Out Win From Huskers


The 'Nebraska' baseball team opened its final Big Ten series of the season, hosting the Michigan Wolverines Thursday night in Lincoln. The Huskers fell behind 7-5, but Blake Headley lined out with two men in scoring position in the bottom of the ninth to end the game. Nebraska now sits in third place in the Big Ten standings with two games to play.

Huskers Outhit Bluejays To Earn Victory


The Nebraska baseball team defeated Creighton 12-9 on Wednesday night at TD Ameritrade Park Omaha in the last Husker non conference game of the regular season. Nebraska scored five runs in the first inning and led 9-1 at one point then held on to win by three. The Huskers used eight pitchers and gave up 11 walks, but Nebraska still outlasted Creighton by getting 16 hits.

Pius X Moves To Championship Round, LSW Ends Season


The 2013 NSAA State High School Baseball Tournament continued on Tuesday.  In Class A, Lincoln Southwest lost to Papillion-LaVista 11-1 in five innings. The Silver Hawks end their season. In Class B, Lincoln Pius X has guaranteed themselves a spot in Thursday's championship round at Haymarket Park with a 9-1 win over Omaha Skutt Tuesday night.

Monday's NSAA State high school baseball tournament scores include Lincoln Southwest staying alive in the Class A losers bracket by defeating Omaha Burke 7-3. The Silver Hawks play Papillion-LaVista in an elimination game Tuesday at 4pm at Papillion's Fricke Field. In Class B at Haymarket Park, Lincoln Pius X advances to the winner's bracket semifinal, blasting Omaha Gross 11-0 in five innings Monday night. 

Husker Baseball Takes Series From Minnesota


The Nebraska baseball team took care of business Sunday afternoon with an 8-0 win over the Minnesota Golden Gophers in the rubber match of the series. The Huskers now have a 14-7 Big Ten record and are just one game back of first-place Indiana in the Big Ten baseball standings. Nebraska, Ohio State & Minnesota all have the same winning pct. in the Big Ten.

Nebraska Hosts Softball Regional


The Nebraska softball team has been selected as an NCAA Regional host. The #14 Huskers will welcome Stanford, Tulsa and Northern Iowa to Lincoln for the NCAA Regional on Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Bowlin Stadium. Tulsa and Stanford open the regional Friday afternoon, with Nebraska and Northern Iowa playing Friday night.

Campbell Suceeds McPherren As New East High Basketball Coach


Lincoln East has announced longtime assistant Jeff Campbell will replace Ed McPherren as their head boys basketball coach. McPherren is retiring after more than 40 years of teaching and coaching at East High- the last 18 as the head coach.

Game Times Changed For State Baseball Tourney


Saturday’s NSAA Class B State Baseball schedule has changed.  First round games at Haymarket Park in Lincoln are scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. as top-ranked Norris plays Waverly. Omaha Roncalli Catholic and Omaha Gross Catholic will square off in a 1 p.m. contest. 

Nebraska Will Host Miami In ACC/Big Ten Challenge


Nebraska will host defending Atlantic Coast Conference champion Miami in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge on Dec. 4 at Pinnacle Bank Arena.  The game is one of 12 men's basketball matchups announced Wednesday pitting ACC and Big Ten teams.

Pairings Set For State Baseball Tournament


The pairings are out for the 2013 NSAA State High School Baseball tournament that begins this weekend. In Class A to be played at Werner Park in Papillion, Lincoln Southwest opens up the tournament against the top-seed Papillion-LaVista South at 10am Saturday.

Several Lincoln high school coaches, athletes and administrators were honored at the 2013 KFOR Sportscasters Club All-City Recognition Banquet Tuesday night. The 2013 Ralph Beechner Coaches of the Year are Lincoln Pius X Baseball Coach Troy Charf and Lincoln Southeast Girls Basketball Coach Kara Graham.

Frazier To Be Inducted Into College Football Hall of Fame


Heisman Trophy winners Danny Wuerffel of Florida and Ron Dayne of Wisconsin, along with two-time national champion quarterback Tommie Frazier of Nebraska, have been selected for induction to the College Football Hall of Fame. They are part of a class of 12 players and two coaches chosen by the National Football Foundation and revealed Tuesday.

Hoosiers Take Series From Huskers


The Nebraska baseball team wasn't able to deliver a win Monday afternoon at Hawks Field/Haymarket Park. No. 14 Indiana took the three-game series with a 10-2 victory. The Huskers now sit third in the Big Ten standings, behind Minnesota and Indiana, and could fall to fourth pending the outcome of this afternoon’s game between Ohio State and Northwestern. 

Husker Women Sweep Nittany Lions


A one-hit shutout led the 14th-ranked Nebraska softball team past Penn State Monday afternoon in the regular-season finale at Nittany Lion Softball Park. Nebraska has clinched the No. 2 seed for this week's Big Ten Tournament at Bowlin Stadium. The Huskers finished the regular season with a 39-12 record, including a 16-6 mark in Big Ten Conference play.

Big Red Baseball/Softball Teams To Play Monday


The Nebraska baseball team scored a 3-2 win over #16 Indiana Sunday afternoon at Hawks Field. The Huskers are 21-24 overall on the year, but 12-5 during league play. The Huskers and Hoosiers play the rubber match of their three-game series Monday at 12:05 p.m. Meanwhile, the 14th-ranked Nebraska softball team stranded 12 runners on base, failing to deliver a clutch hit in a frustrating 3-2 loss at Penn State on Sunday. 

Huskers Announce 2013-14 Season Already A Sellout


Nebraska has sold out the public allotment of men's basketball tickets six months before the Cornhuskers play their first game at their new arena.  The athletic department announced Friday that the only tickets left for next season are those that must be held back for visiting teams and about 100 student tickets that are expected to be sold soon.  

Few Season Tickets Remain For Upcoming Husker Basketball Season


The University of Nebraska Athletic Department announced Thursday that less than 300 public season tickets remain for the first season of Nebraska men’s basketball at the new Pinnacle Bank Arena. Six months ahead of the first exhibition game, the Husker basketball program has easily shattered the previous best of 12,000 season tickets set during the 1992-93 season. 

Huskers Host Weekend Series With Hoosiers


After several days off during final exams, the Nebraska baseball team returns to action this weekend, hosting Indiana in the first game of a Saturday, Sunday, Monday series. The Huskers are tied with the Hoosiers for second place in the Big Ten, both with 11-4 conference records and both percentage points behind 7-3 Minnesota.

District Soccer Championships from Thursday. On the boys side....in A-1, Grand Island blanks Lincoln North Star 4-0.  Lincoln Southeast wins in a shootout 1-0 over Bellevue East to claim the A-6 title.  Lincoln Pius X beat Omaha Burke 3-1 to win the A-7 championship and Norris makes their first trip to state by shutting out Waverly 3-0 to win the B-1 crown. 

Wednesday District Soccer Scores


Lincoln Southwest upset previously undefeated Omaha Marian 2-0 in the Class A-1 District girls soccer championship game yesterday in Omaha. It was not only the first loss for Marian, the defending state champion, it was the first time anyone had scored on the Crusaders this season. Southwest will advance to the girls state tournament with a 13-5 record, and could meet Marian in the first round.

Carnes Transferring To Northern Iowa


Former Nebraska football player Brion Carnes has announced he'll transfer to Northern Iowa. Carnes wrote on his Facebook page Wednesday that he would enroll at the Football Championship Subdivision school in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Carnes appeared in three games in 2011 as the backup to quarterback Taylor Martinez before switching to wide receiver in the middle of last season.

Kansas Junior-College Guard Signs With Creighton


A guard from a Kansas junior college has signed a letter of intent to play basketball next season at Creighton.  James Milliken averaged better than 18 points a game and shot 42 percent on 3-pointers for Cowley County Community College in Arkansas City, Kan., last season. He was named to the All-Jayhawk Conference first team and was a first-team all-region pick.

Grand Island Boys, Southwest Girls Win HAC Track Titles


The Heartland Athletic Conference Track & Field championships were moved up and held Tuesday at Lincoln High's Beechner Athletic Complex. Grand Island won the Boys team title.  G.I.'s Steven Cahoy went 16-feet even to win the pole vault.  Fremont finished second and Lincoln North Star third in the boys team standings.

In the Boys A-6 semifinals at Seacrest Field: Lincoln Southwest, the #1 seed in the district, was upset by Bellevue East 3-2, and Lincoln Southeast shutout Omaha North 2-0 in OT, setting up a district championship match between Southeast and Bellevue East. In an A-7 semifinal, Lincoln Pius X defeated Norfolk 2-0 and in the A-5 it was Millard West 1, Lincoln High 0. 

Omaha Beef Indoor Football Team Offers Tim Tebow A Contract


The Omaha Beef have a job waiting for Tim Tebow if he wants it - and the Nebraska indoor football team will even pay him $75 a game.  A day after Tebow was cut by the New York Jets, the Beef called the office of Tebow agent Jimmy Sexton to offer a standard player contract.

Alexa Strange Leaving Nebraska Volleyball Program


The Nebraska volleyball program has lost another player. Head Coach John Cook announced Monday night that rising sophomore Alexa Strange is returning to her home state of California and will focus on playing beach volleyball. Cook says he wishes her the best. Strange was the only setter on the Cornhuskers' roster this spring. Strange played in 25 matches last season as a right-side hitter.

Merfeld Gets New Title On Creighton Coaching Staff


Creighton assistant men's basketball coach Steve Merfeld has been named director of player development and Patrick Sellers has been hired from Hofstra to take Merfeld's former job. Head Coach Greg McDermott, who announced the moves Monday, said he created the player development position to strengthen the staff as the Bluejays move from the Missouri Valley Conference to the Big East.

7-year-old Atkinson Boy's Cancer Fight Picks Up Another Fan, The President


The 7-year-old cancer patient who became an Internet sensation for his touchdown run in Nebraska's spring football game has yet another fan - President Barack Obama. Jack Hoffman, his family and former Cornhuskers running back Rex Burkhead visited Obama for 15 minutes in the Oval Office on Monday. 

Fewest Huskers Taken In 7-Round Era Of NFL Draft


Running back Rex Burkhead and strong safety Daimion Stafford are the only two Nebraska players taken in the NFL draft, making this the first time since the draft went to seven rounds in 1994 that so few Cornhuskers were chosen. Burkhead went to the Cincinnati Bengals in the sixth round and Stafford to the Tennessee Titans in the seventh.

Huskers Beat Rutgers To End Four-Game Losing Streak


Nebraska snapped a four-game losing streak with a 3-1 win Sunday afternoon over the Rutgers Scarlet Knights at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha. Sophomore pitcher Kyle Kubat went a career-high 8.0 innings to improve to 3-0 on the year, giving up one run on four hits. 

Husker Softball Team Takes Series From Michigan


The 16th-ranked Nebraska softball team scored 5 times in the bottom of the 6th inning to rally for a 7-4 victory over No. 9 Michigan on a warm Senior Day at Bowlin Stadium Sunday afternoon. Michigan used a two-run second inning and single runs in the third and fourth inning to take a 4-0 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth inning. 

McDermott To Stay At Creighton For Senior Year


All-America forward Doug McDermott says he'll return to Creighton for his senior year instead of declaring for the NBA draft. McDermott made the announcement Thursday at a news conference in Creighton's practice gym. He was joined by his father, Bluejays coach Greg McDermott, and teammates. Doug McDermott was the second-leading scorer in Division I last season, averaging 23.2 points.

Boys and Girls District Soccer Pairings


Six Lincoln teams earned No. 1 seeds for district high school soccer tournaments that begin next week. For the Boys: Lincoln Southwest and Lincoln Pius X are No. 1 seeds in Class A and will host districts. In Class B, Lincoln Lutheran is the No. 1 seed in the B-1 district hosted by Beatrice. Southwest and Lnk. Southeast are both in the A-6 district at Seacrest Field.

Huskers Comeback Falls Short, Versus K-State


The Nebraska baseball team scored 10 runs Wednesday night, but it wasn’t enough.  Kansas State scored 13 and outlasted the Huskers 13-10 in Lincoln. Nebraska fell behind 8-1 early, but rallied and took a 9-8 lead in the sixth inning, only to give up five more runs to the Wildcats and lose by three. Kansas State has defeated the Huskers three times this season. 

Nebraska Softball Team Shuts Out Creighton


The Nebraska softball team shutout Creighton 6-0 Wednesday night at Bowlin Stadium. Freshman pitcher Emily Lockman tossed a two-hit shutout and all the Husker runs came on three home runs. The Huskers improved their record to 35-10. Nebraska wraps up their regular-season home schedule this weekend with a three-game series against Big Ten front-runner Michigan at Bowlin Stadium. 

Southeast Captures Heartland Athletic Conference Baseball Crown


Lincoln Southeast won the Heartland Athletic Conference baseball championship with a 10-6 victory over Lincoln North Star Wednesday evening at Sherman Field. Jackson Ingram hit a solo home run in the sixth inning to spark a four-run rally for the Knights, who improved to 6-7.

Nebraska Volleyball Player Thramer Out For Season


Nebraska volleyball coach John Cook has announced that volleyball player Hayley Thramer will miss her senior season because of a knee injury. Thramer was hurt Saturday in the Cornhuskers' final spring exhibition at Wichita State. Cook said Wednesday the program "had its heart ripped out" with the news that Thramer had suffered a career-ending injury. 

Former East Basketball Star's Son Signs With Nevada


The son of former Lincoln East High School and University of Colorado basketball star Alex Stivrins has signed a letter of intent to play college basketball at the University of Nevada next season. Lucas Stivrins, a 6-11 forward/center, will play for the Wolfpack next year, after spending this past season playing at Pratt Community College in Kansas for head coach and former East High basketball star Jesse Shaw. 

Stars Even USHL Playoff Series With Win Over Stampede


Lincoln Stars bounced back to beat the Sioux Falls Stampede 4-0 last night in the second game of their USHL playoff series. Lincoln evened the United States Hockey League Western Conference best-of-five series at 1-1.

Nebraska Signs Forward From Kansas Junior College


The Nebraska men's basketball team has signed a 6-foot-8, 250-pound forward to a letter of intent. Leslee Smith played last season at Seward County Community College in Kansas after spending his first two years of college at SMU. The native of Longlook, British Virgin Islands, bolsters the inside game for a Nebraska team that loses big men Brandon Ubel and Andre Almeida. 

Iowa Western Guard Brooks Signs With Creighton


Devin Brooks of Iowa Western Community College has signed a letter of intent to play basketball at Creighton. The 6-foot-2 guard from New York City started all 35 games for Iowa Western last season, leading the team with 15.9 points, 6.6 rebounds and 5.6 assists. He is Iowa Western's all-time leader in assists. 

New Nebraska Basketball Court At Pinnacle Bank Arena Released


Images have been released of the Nebraska basketball floor to be used at Lincoln's new Pinnacle Bank Arena. There's a outline of the state of Nebraska at center court, with a block red "N" in the middle, a look that was featured at the Bob Devaney Sports Center from 1987 until 1996. 

Heartland Athletic Conference Baseball Tourney Postponed


Rain and wet conditions have prompted Thursday's scheduled start of the Heartland Athletic Conference baseball tournament in Lincoln to be postponed.   Conditions on Wednesday at Sherman and Den Hartog Fields were not in playing shape according to tournament officials.

Huskers Fall Short of Sweeping Hawkeyes


The Nebraska baseball team wrapped up its three-game series at Iowa on Sunday with a 6-5 loss to the Hawkeyes. The Huskers trailed 6-3 going into the ninth inning yesterday and scored two runs to pull within one, but a double play preserved a 6-5 Hawkeye win.

7-Year-Old Nebraska Boy Captures The Hearts of Many


Jack Hoffman just might go down as the biggest star of the Nebraska spring game. And he's only 7 years old. Hoffman of Atkinson, Neb., has won the hearts of fans and everyone in the football program for his courageous bout with brain cancer. Star running back Rex Burkhead befriended the 7-year-old last year and is the captain of the support network known as "Team Jack."

Husker Women Win 10th Straight Game


Lindsey Moore scored 13 points, Rachel Theriot added 11 and Nebraska held on for its 10th straight win, 55-53 over Wisconsin on Thursday night.

Emily Cady and Jordan Hooper grabbed 11 rebounds apiece for the Cornhuskers (22-6, 12-3), who likely will be the No. 2 seed in the Big Ten Conference tournament. With the loss, Wisconsin can do no better than No. 11. Both teams finish their seasons

Wilderness Ridge To Host NAIA Womens Golf Championships


The NAIA Womens Golf Championships will come to Lincoln and be played at Wilderness Ridge Golf Course in 2013 and 2014.  The announcement Tuesday from Doane College and Lincoln Convention and Visitors Bureau comes after the NAIA did a site check in early May.  

Saltdogs Start 4-game Series with Winnipeg


The Lincoln Saltdogs lost to the Sioux City Pheasants 3-2 yesterday in American Association baseball play. The 'Dogs' open up a seven game homestand tonight at Haymarket Park with game one of a four game series against the Winnipeg Goldeyes.  The Saltdogs are 8-9 on the year.  The Goldeyes are 11-4.

Perlman Says Big Ten Prefers 'Plus 1'


Nebraska chancellor Harvey Perlman says conference presidents would choose to keep the current college system in place if there were a vote today. However, he says change appears to be inevitable and if that happens, the Big Ten would prefer a Plus 1 system over a four team playoff.
