Former NU Athletic Director Pederson Fired From AD Job At Pitt


Former Nebraska athletic director Steve Pederson has been fired as the University of Pittsburgh's athletic director, after Paul Chryst's abrupt departure for Wisconsin left the Panthers searching for their fourth football coach in four years.  Randy Juhl, vice chancellor for research conduct and compliance, will serve as Pitt's acting athletic director. 

Pelini's Last Meeting With Players Laced With Remarks Toward AD


An audio recording believed to be from Bo Pelini's last private meeting Dec. 2 with Nebraska football players at Lincoln North Star High School just days after be was fired has been leaked to the Omaha World Herald.  Pelini's speech is laced with profanities and targeted remarks aimed at University of Nebraska Athletic Director Shawn Eichorst.  

Pelini Audiotape Surfaces From Final Player Meeting


On the day he was introduced as Youngstown State's new head coach, the ugly nature of Bo Pelini's departure from Nebraska was revealed.  Pelini, who was fired on Nov. 30, lambasted Nebraska athletic director Shawn Eichorst in a profanity-filled talk during his final meeting with his players. 

NU FOOTBALL: Abdullah and Gregory Named All-Americans


Nebraska senior I-back Ameer Abdullah and junior defensive end Randy Gregory have each been named Associated Press Football All-Americans.  Abdullah is a second-team pick, while Gregory is a 3rd-team selection.  

Milliken Suspended From Creighton Basketball Team


Creighton men's basketball guard James Milliken has been suspended indefinitely for violating team rules.  Coach Greg McDermott announced Tuesday that Milliken would not practice or travel with the Bluejays during the suspension. A statement from the school said a decision on Milliken's status in the program would be made in January.

AP: Pelini To Be Named New Youngstown State Coach


A person with knowledge of the decision tells The Associated Press that former Nebraska football coach Bo Pelini will be the next coach at Youngstown State, an FCS school in his hometown of Youngstown, Ohio.  The person spoke Tuesday on condition of anonymity because the school was still working on an official announcement.

NEBRASKA FOOTBALL: Huskers Will Face USC In Holiday Bowl


The Nebraska football team will play USC in the National University Holiday Bowl in San Diego on Saturday, December 27th at 7pm Lincoln time.  Mike Riley was named Nebraska’s head coach on Dec. 4, but will not coach the Huskers in the bowl game, with Interim Coach Barney Cotton leading the Huskers in San Diego.  

HUSKER MEN'S BASKETBALL: Big 2nd Half Boosts Creighton Past Huskers


Austin Chatman scored 16 points, Isiah Zierden hit three big 3-pointers in the second half and Creighton defeated in-state rival Nebraska 65-55 on Sunday night.  The Bluejays (7-2) have won four straight over the Cornhuskers (5-2) - all by double digits - and handed them only their second loss in 21 all-time games at Pinnacle Bank Arena.  

HUSKER WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: 'Bama Upsets 12th-Ranked Huskers


Nikki Hegstetter scooped a loose ball off the floor to score with less than two seconds to play and Alabama survived a missed final shot to upset 12th-ranked Nebraska 53-51 on Sunday.  Hegstetter had two baskets and two offensive boards by that point but was in the right spot to scoop an Ashley Williams miss off the floor and toss in her own shot as the Crimson Tide (8-3) handed Nebraska it's first loss of the season (7-1).

HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL: Northeast Holds Off Westside Comeback


The high school basketball season is underway, as Lincoln Northeast and Omaha Westside squared off in a boys matchup Thursday night at the Ed Johnson Gym.   The Rockets earned a 64-51 win and held off a fourth quarter comeback by the Warriors, who went on a 16-4 run.  

Riley Formally Introduced As Nebraska's Next Football Coach


Mike Riley has a five-year contract at Nebraska paying him $2.7 million a year. The terms were announced Friday before Riley was introduced as the new Husker head football coach Friday at a news conference inside the west skyboxes of Memorial Stadium. Nebraska Athletic Director Shawn Eichorst says Coach Riley is an elite football coach with an incredible history and tradition behind him.

NU MEN'S BASKETBALL: Petteway and Shields Lead Huskers Over FSU


Terran Petteway scored 25 points and Shavon Shields had 21 and eight rebounds as Nebraska held off a furious rally to defeat Florida State 70-65 on Monday night in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.  Nebraska led 37-21 at the half, but the Seminoles closed within one, 62-61, with 2:18 left after a pair of Aaron Thomas free throws.

Former Husker Frost May Be Leading Candidate For NU Coacing Job


Oregon offensive coordinator and former Nebraska quarterback Scott Frost is listed as the favorite to earn the NU head coaching job according to one Las Vegas sportsbook.  Frost has 5/2 odds to be named Nebraska's next head coach.  Frost was asked by media members in Eugene, Oregon on Monday about the job and he simply said his focus is on Arizona in the Pac-12 championship.

Pelini Firing Puts Parody Twitter Account In Limbo


The firing of Nebraska coach Bo Pelini has created an uncertain future for @ (at)FauxPelini.  Asked whether the popular parody Twitter account would live on, the man behind it tweeted to The Associated Press on Monday that "the short/honest answer right now is `not sure."'  @FauxPelini has amassed 161,000 followers since being created in December 2010. 

NU FOOTBALL: Gerry and Pierson-El Earn Big Ten Honors


Two Nebraska football players have been honored by the Big Ten Conference on Monday for their performance in the Huskers’ win over Iowa.Sophomore safety Nate Gerry was honored as the conference’s Defensive Player of the Week, while freshman punt returner De’Mornay Pierson-El was the co-Special Teams Player of the Week.  

NWU's Zumpfe and Wardyn Honored As Academic All-Americans


Nebraska Wesleyan Senior wide receiver Connor Zumpfe headlines the 2014 Capital One Academic All-America College Division Football Team. An exercise science major from York, Zumpfe has been recognized as the Capital One Academic All- American of the Year for College Division Football.  Joining Zumpfe on the Academic All- America team is NWU senior defensive back Seth Wardyn.

NU MEN'S BASKETBALL: Shields Scores 35 In Win Over Mavs


Shavon Shields scored a career-high 35 points, 21 of them in the first half, to lead slow-starting Nebraska past Nebraska-Omaha 80-67 in men's basketball on Tuesday night.  Nebraska (3-1) trailed by as many as 16 early but opened up a double digit lead late in the first half.  Omaha (2-2, 0-0 Summit) cut the Nebraska lead to 47-43 on C.J. Carter's layup with 13:15 left.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Bluejays Race Past Eastern Illinois


Reserve Geoffrey Groselle scored a career-high 15 points, and No. 23 Creighton beat Eastern Illinois 75-53 in the Emerald Coast Classic on Tuesday night.  The Bluejays celebrated coach Greg McDermott's 50th birthday with a victory in their first game as a ranked team this season.  The 7-foot Groselle made his first five shots and finished 7 of 8 from the field. 

NU WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Cady Leads Huskers Over Utes


Emily Cady had 25 points with nine rebounds, Rachel Theriot added 20 points with six assists, and No. 16 Nebraska rolled past Utah 66-43 on Sunday at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.  The Cornhuskers (4-0) shot 42.2 percent from the field, committed just seven turnovers and had a 28-14 advantage in the paint. Theriot also had six rebounds and four of Nebraska's 11 steals.  

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Zierden Leads Creighton In Win Over NC Central


Isaiah Zierden scored 20 points, including 8 of 9 from the line, to lead Creighton over North Carolina Central 65-45 on Sunday.  Zierden was 4 of 7 from the floor - all 3-point attempts - to go along with terrific foul shooting. 

Kuhlkin Leads NU Bowlers To Another Tourney Win


The No.1-rated Nebraska bowling team won their third-straight tournament of the 2014-15 season at the Track Kat Klash in Houston Sunday afternoon. On the final day of the three-day-competition, NU beat rival Arkansas State 4-3 in the best-of-seven Baker Format match to win the 18-team tournament, which was hosted by defending NCAA Champion Sam Houston State. 

Martin Breaks Rifle Record, But Huskers Fall Short At Alaska-Fairbanks


Rachel Martin smashed the Nebraska Rifle program’s previous individual air rifle record on Sunday when the sophomore fired a 597 against Alaska-Fairbanks.  As a team though, the Huskers were not able to defeat the Nanooks, losing by a score of 4,657-4,700.  

Abdullah A Finalist Again For Two More Football Awards


Nebraska senior I-back Ameer Abdullah was named a finalist for two national college football awards on Thursday morning. The record-setting running back was named as one of five finalists for the Paul Hornung Award and is one of four finalists for the Pop Warner College Football Award.  

2015 Inductees Announced For Lincoln Southeast Athletic Hall of Fame


Lincoln Southeast has announced their 2015 class into the school's athletic hall of fame.   Among the nine athletes going in are former football standouts Ty Goode and Ty Gifford.  The 1969 State Championship boys gymnastics team and the 1976 state champion girls golf team are also being inducted along with former coach Dan Wolf. 

HUSKER WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Laudermill Leads NU Over WSU


Tear'a Laudermill scored 20 points on Wednesday night, and No. 16 Nebraska used a big second-half run to pull away from Washington State 82-61.  A few minutes into the second half, Nebraska (3-0) started a 19-2 run, turning a two-point lead into a 59-40 advantage on Allie Havers' layup with 10:35 left.  

MEN'S COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Bluejays Upset No. 18 Sooners


Zach Hanson caught Devin Brooks' air ball along the baseline and put it in the basket for the go-ahead points in the last minute, and Creighton came back from an 18-point deficit to upset No. 18 Oklahoma 65-63 on Wednesday night at CenturyLink Center Omaha.  The Bluejays (3-0) used a 24-4 run to get back in the game after a dismal first-half shooting performance.  

HUSKER FOOTBALL: Abdullah One of Ten Up For Walker Award


Nebraska senior I-back Ameer Abdullah has been named one of 10 semifinalists for the 2014 Doak Walker Award. The award is given annually to the nation’s top running back.  This marks the second straight season Abdullah has been a semifinalist for the award. The 5-9, 200-pound Abdullah has produced a standout senior campaign in 2014. 

HUSKER MEN'S BASKETBALL: Petteway Leads Big Red In Win


Terran Petteway’s 23 points led three Huskers in double figures, while the #21 Nebraska Men's Basketball team clamped down defensively in the second half to post an 82-56 win over Central Arkansas Tuesday night at Pinnacle Bank Arena.  

NWU Men Suffer Loss In Home Basketball Opener


Two games into the Nebraska Wesleyan Men's basketball season, the Prairie Wolves are off to an 0-2 start as they fell to Grace University of Omaha by the final of 93-83 last night at Snyder Arena.  Wesleyan took a 74-72 lead with six minutes left on a Trevor Leiting three-pointer.  

Petteway Among Top 50 For Wooden Award


Nebraska basketball standout Terran Petteway was tabbed for the Wooden Award Men's Preseason Top 50 Monday afternoon. Chosen by a preseason poll of national college basketball experts, the list is comprised of 50 student-athletes who are the early front-runners for the sport’s most prestigious honor.  

Omaha To Host 2018 NCAA Men's Basketball Midwest Regional Tourney


The NCAA announced Monday that CenturyLink Center Omaha will host the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Midwest Regional in 2018. The 2018 Regional will mark the fourth time that CenturyLinkCenter Omaha has hosted NCAA Tournament Basketball action, joining Second/Third Round games it has hosted in 2008 and 2012, as well as the 2015 games the facility will host in March.  

Abdullah Finalist for Two National Awards


University of Nebraska senior I-back Ameer Abdullah was selected as a finalist for a pair of awards Tuesday afternoon. The Homewood, Ala., native was chosen as one of 10 finalists for the 2014 Senior CLASS Award and one of 12 finalists for the 2014 Wuerffel Award.

NWU Top Seed In NCAA Division III Volleyball Regional


Announcement was made Monday that Nebraska Wesleyan is one of 64 schools selected to play in the upcoming NCAA Division III women's volleyball tournament. The Prairie Wolves will meet Northwestern College of St. Paul, Minnesota this Thursday (Nov. 13) in the first round of a regional being hosted by the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul. 

Silver Hawks Still In State Softball Tourney After Day One


Lincoln Southwest is still alive in the NSAA State High School Softball Tournament, after falling in their first game in the Class A tournament 12-6 to Papillion-LaVista, but bouncing back to beat Lincoln North Star 4-0 in an elimination game Thursday at the Smith Softball Complex in Hastings.   

State Softball Tournament Starts Wednesday


The NSAA State High School Softball tournament starts this morning at the Smith Softball Complex in Hastings.   Raymond Central opens up the Class C tournament at 9am against Guardian Angels Central Catholic.  In Class A at 11:30, sixth-seed Lincoln North Star plays 3rd-seed Omaha Marian at Field 3.  

Elkhorn South Wins Class A Golf Title, LSW Finishes 4th


Elkhorn South is the Class A girls state golf champion, after shooting a two-round team total of 725 at the Norfolk Country Club.  Papillion-LaVista finished runner-up in the team standings, while Millard North came in third and Lincoln Southwest finished fourth.  Lincoln Southeast finished tied for fifth with Omaha Marian and Lincoln Pius X wound up finishing at No. 8. 

Nebraska's 2015 Baseball Schedule Is Out


The Nebraska baseball team's 2015 schedule is out, with the opening game of the year scheduled for Friday, February 13th in Las Vegas, taking on the UNLV Rebels.   The Huskers will play 27 home games at Haymarket Park and will open up the home part of the schedule March 10th, hosting Northern Colorado.   

Nebraska Mens Hoops: Huskers To Play On BTN 13 Times In 2014-15


A minimum of 13 Nebraska men’s basketball games will air across Big Ten Network platforms this season.  Eleven games will air on BTN and available nationally...two games will air online on BTN Plus, which is a subscription-based service available on computers, smartphones and tablets as part of the BTN2Go app.  

Nebraska Men's Basketball: Schedule Released For Tourney In Hawaii


The Nebraska basketball team will face a tough challenge in the opening round of the 2014 Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic, when the Huskers face homestanding Hawaii in its tournament opener. The Huskers and Rainbow Warriors will tip off at Midnight (central) on Dec. 23, in a game televised nationally on ESPNU.  

Two Saltdogs Receive Weekly Honors


The Lincoln Saltdogs swept the league's weekly awards for the week ending June 1, as 1B Ian Gac was named Pointstreak Player of the Week and RHP Marquis Fleming was named Pointstreak Pitcher of the Week. Pointstreak is the official baseball statistician of the American Association.  

Nebraska Women's Basketball Notches NCAA Tourney Win


Jordan Hooper had 23 points and 11 rebounds, and fourth-seeded Nebraska defeated Fresno State 74-55 in the first round of the NCAA women's tournament Saturday in Los Angeles. Emily Cady added 15 points and 11 rebounds for the Cornhuskers (26-6), the B

Husker Men Fall to Baylor in NCAA Tournament


The Husker Basketball team is finished after one game in the NCAA Tournament. Nebraska coach Tim Miles was ejected from the Cornhuskers'  West Region game against Baylor after getting whistled for two technical fouls in the second half. Miles drew his second technical for unsportsmanlike conduct with 11:17 left in the game and Nebraska losing 50-32.

Edwards Named Big Ten Players of the Week


Nebraska softball player Tatum Edwards was named the Big Ten Player of the Week on Monday. The award is the first of Edwards’ career, although she is a four-time Big Ten Pitcher of the Week honoree.....

Huskers Hold First Florida Practice


The Nebraska football team practiced on the campus of the University of North Florida for the first time Friday morning, beginning preparation for the Gator Bowl against No. 23 Georgia. The Huskers and Bulldogs are set to battle Wednesday, New Year's Day, in an 11 a.m game that will be broadcast on ESPN2. The Huskers practiced in helmets, shoulder pads and shorts for just over two hours.  It was the first of four scheduled pre-game practices.

Huskers Prepare in Florida


The Nebraska football team arrived in Jacksonville, Florida yesterday (Thursday), six days away from their showdown with the 23rd-ranked Georgia Bulldogs in the Gator Bowl on New Year's Day. The Cornhuskers will workout today (Friday) for the first time since before Christmas. Kickoff of the Gator Bowl is at 11am next Wednesday.

Holiday Tourney Play Begins


The holiday basketball tournament schedule will get underway around the area tomorrow and Saturday. Tournaments that start Friday include the Lincoln Lutheran holiday tournament which will feature the host school Lutheran, along with Fairbury, Raymond Central and Louisville.
