LINCOLN -- The first Nebraska Republican is committing to a candidacy for U.S. Senate. Former Nebraska State Treasurer Shane Osborn has filed with the Federal Election Commission to run for the seat being given up by Republican Senator Mike Johanns, who is not running for re-election next year. Last weekend, Governor Heineman said he wasn't interested. Osborn, who was raised in Norfolk, became a national celebrity in 2001 when the Navy surveillance plane he was piloting over the South China Sea collided with a Chinese fighter plane. He successfully landed his crippled plane on a Chinese island. He and his crew spent 11 days in captivity before being released.
