New USDA Packaging Would Lead to Higher Prices

A USDA packaging rule-in-limbo could end up making you pay more at the grocery store.  A legislative resolution stuck in the Legislature's Agriculture Committee would send a message to Washington as lawsuits come in over whether food should be labeled with its country of origin.  Ogallala Senator, Ken Schilz, says a producer with cattle from the United States would have to separate cattle from Canada, for example, and the packing plant would actually have to stop production and start over to keep meat separate. This would mean more work for the producer and packing plants, which ultimately increases costs and raises the cost of meat.  When time is money, Senator Schilz, says you would ultimately pay for it.  Supporters of labeling, including 5th generation Nebraska cattleman, Chris Abbott , says food safety is a critical issue.
