The Nebraska Department of Revenue is lowering the interest rate that the state charges for delinquent taxes, starting next year. According to the department's website, the state will charge 3% interest per year on unpaid taxes and special assessments owed to the state after Jan. 1. The current rate is 5% and has been since January of 2009. The rate is based on the federal government's average short-term borrowing rate.
