LINCOLN -- You've heard of people buying old, rundown cars and restoring them like they were brand new. One Lincoln man has done that with a cold-war era civil defense siren. Erik Muttersbough bought the Thunderbolt-model siren online and restored it into prime condition. He tells KFOR News this model of siren and others like it are ceasing to exist anymore, mainly due to newer sirens have a battery backup. His siren was on display at this weekend's Central Plains Severe Weather Symposium at UNL's Hardin Hall. The siren is similar to ones that are still in use on top of the VA Hospital, the downtown Lincoln YMCA building, Northeast High School and various communities and state parks in Lancaster County.
