Judge Rejects Part of Fremont's Illegal Immigrant Ordinance
A difference of opinion over a judge's ruling on Fremont's illegal immigrant ordinance. A judge has rejected part of the ordinance denying housing permits to illegal immigrants, but upheld a requirement that employers verify the citizenship status of people they hire. Fremont's attorney, Kris Kobach, who is the Kansas Secretary of State, says 75% of the ordinance was upheld, including the requirement that Fremont employers use the federal E-Verify database to ensure employees are legal. Lincoln attorney, Shirley Mora James, who worked with the Mexican American Legal Defense & Educational Fund to challenge Fremont's ordinance, says the judge effectively gutted the ordinance.
